Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Curriculum

CHWs are a direct and continuous link with patients. A trained CHW sensitizes the community, performs active case finding for HIV, links HIV-infected clients to care, and is responsible for case management of a cohort of families to improve adherence to therapy and retention in care. This curriculum covers the basic knowledge and skills needed for CHWs to improve different HIV services within the health facility including identification, linkage, retention and support. In addition to HIV basics, the training has supplementary units focused on PMTCT, psychosocial support, opportunistic infections, tuberculosis and HIV, nutrition and family planning.

Mentor Toolkit

Clinical mentors with experience in pediatric HIV facilitate clinical and health systems improvements to support delivery of high-quality care. Mentors help facility-based clinicians to develop knowledge and skills about pediatric and general HIV management, lead quality improvement initiatives for health systems strengthening and provide guidance and support to CHWs and other lay cadres. The Mentor Toolkit is designed for use by mentors and consists of:
  • A clinical lecture series
  • Case study teaching cards
  • Resources for the implementation of a mobile-phone hotline for clinical consultations

HDAs are a cadre of health care workers specifically focused on providing HIV testing services, monitoring quality assurance of testing procedures and assisting with linking all HIV-infected patients to other HIV care and treatment services. The HDA Training Curriculum covers HIV transmission and prevention basics, with a specialized focus on HIV testing services including active case finding, quality assurance, provider-initiated testing and counseling (PITC) and linkage to care.
